Emporia
Emporia Pro Level 2 home EV charger hands-on review

In April 2023, we had the opportunity to evaluate Emporia’s Level 2 home EV charger, which is now known as the Classic model. Obviously, the $399 price tag (now $429) caught my interest; at the time, it was half the cost of some competitors while offering a similar list of features. I came away very […]

2024 Toyota bZ4X AWD Limited review: Significantly improved, still hard to recommend

For 2024, Toyota made a few small refinements and one major enhancement to its bZ4X all-electric SUV. Depending on the trim level, there’s more standard equipment than before and the all-wheel-drive model’s battery pack DC fast charges dramatically quicker than before. Unfortunately, despite these meaningful enhancements, many of the bZ4X’s inherent shortcomings have not been […]

PHEVs aren’t the gateway drug to EVs yet for one simple, undeniable reason

Over the weekend a post on LinkedIn called out a colleague in the industry for saying that Americans don’t understand what PHEVs are and how to use them properly. The author of the article is correct. We don’t know how to use PHEVs properly, and as long as we don’t use them properly they aren’t […]

Should Chinese EVs be sold in the United States?

There is a debate right now about whether our not Chinese car companies should be allowed to sell in the U.S. With the announcement of BYD aiming to build cars in Mexico, that creates a way for the brand to enter the U.S. and offer its cars to a new market. Opponents to this will […]

Towing with an electric truck is both the best and the worst

When videos and reviews of the Ford F-150 Lightning came out, people were outraged by how much the range dropped while towing. In our testing, the truck didn’t do too badly, but other publications saw much larger declines. This led to plenty of inflammatory tweets and clickbait headlines. But here’s why folks are dead wrong […]

Modern vehicles suffer from tech overload

Technology is important. It’s what makes the future brighter and happier. But car interiors are no place for over-the-top razzle-dazzle. Things are getting out of hand. It’s crazy. Thanks to internet-connected smartphones, we walk around with instant access to a huge chunk of all recorded human knowledge right in our pockets and purses. But at […]

Chevrolet leaving a Bolt-sized hole in the affordable EV marketplace

Chevrolet officially announced that the Bolt EV and EUV are dead at the end of the 2023 calendar year. With its removal from the marketplace, the number of truly affordable EVs drops quite significantly. The Tesla Model 3, at least at the time of this writing, is $41,380 with destination. The best four audiobooks for your next road trip

It’s an ongoing discussion amongst me and my and my book-loving friends: Is listening to an audiobook mean you’re reading a book? Does listening to an audiobook “count” as having “read” a book? Depending on my mood I say, “yes” listening to a great book is as ideal as flipping the pages on an e-reader […]
